My column this week contrasting the Hometown Democracy Amendment petition with a new petition drive launched by the business community got a quick response from organizer of the new petition, Michael Caputo. He soft-pedaled his connections to the Florida Chamber of Commerce, but the St. Pete Times reports the Chamber, the Florida Homebuilders Association and U.S. Sugar are bankrolling Caputo's petition drive as he refers to Lesley Blackner, the main force behind Hometown Democracy as a "special interest.'' Caputo, a New York PR guy who has relocated to Orlando for this job, was behind the brilliant PR campaign that killed the Everglades sugar tax a few years ago and has worked for everyone from Boris Yelstin to the Nicaraguan Contras, according to a quick search on the Internet. He should be formidable.
