State constitution gives people a say

Is there a joke in Mary Hurley's My Word column, "Why I'll vote no on Amend. 4" (Orlando Sentinel, Thursday)?

She argues Amendment 4 is unconstitutional. The Florida Supreme Court contradicts her argument by determining it's OK to let the Florida population determine if this proposal will legally amend the Florida Constitution. The Florida Constitution provides for this procedure, and voters have circumvented our ineffective, gerrymandered state Legislature on everything from the much-needed class-size amendment to the more properly legislated pregnant pig amendment.

Hurley's argument is a spurious attempt to justify her vote. She should honestly declare that she is motivated by her real-estate-development interests. Developers are exactly the special interests to be blunted by Hometown Democracy, Amendment 4.
