STUART -- Martin County Commissioners declined to take a position on the Hometown Democracy amendment to Florida’s Constitution, after a motion to back the measure failed for a lack of a second, Tuesday.

Commissioner Sarah Heard said she supported the amendment that is expected to go before Florida voters that would require most changes to a county’s comprehensive plan be approved by voters after getting the local government approval. And she asked for a motion to back the amendment.

“I don’t know why we wouldn’t want to give our voters final say on how our county develops,” said Heard.

However, no other commissioner would second her motion or offer discussion in support or opposed to the amendment.

Proponents say the amendment would curb rapid development, while opponents said it will curb economic growth.
